SUMMARY:Kintsugi: The Restorative Art of Naoko Fukumaru
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden is thrilled to feature Kintsugi: The Restorative Art of Naoko Fukumaru in our Pavilion and Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Galleries this fall. Kintsugi is an ancient method of mending damaged ceramics using urushi (natural lacquer) dusted with powdered gold. This type of mending highlights the beauty of imperfections\, rather than trying to hide them. This timely exhibition will explore universally resonant themes of healing through the artwork of kintsugi artist and master conservator Naoko Fukumaru.

SUMMARY:Art Exhibition: Following Fire
DESCRIPTION:World Forestry Center presents Following Fire\, A Resilient Forest / An Uncertain Future. In September 2020\, the Holiday Farm Fire\, driven by fierce east winds\, burned 173\,000 acres along the forested McKenzie River canyon in the Cascade Range of Oregon. Two months later\, in an impulsive response\, photographer David Paul Bayles and disturbance ecologist Frederick Swanson began a photography project to document the stark beauty of the burned forest and its vibrant response to fire.

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony Workshop: Learn the Role of Guest with Jan Waldmann
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden’s Tea Ceremony Workshop offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional practice of Chanoyu\, or the Way of Tea. Experience the art of tranquility\, mindfulness\, and omotenashi\, whole-hearted hospitality. It is not an exaggeration to say that through tea\, one can understand much of Japanese culture. Tea’s influence can be found in many of the nation’s most beloved artforms\, including arranging flowers\, calligraphy\, incense\, ceramics and lacquerware. Japanese gardens are also deeply intertwined with tea ceremony. The four principles of tea\, wa (harmony)\, kei (respect)\, sei (purity)\, and jaku (tranquility)\, are explored by the gardeners of Portland Japanese Garden in their work every day.
