In this moment of climate uncertainty\, World Forestry Center is leveraging creativity\, art\, and storytelling to spotlight forest-based solutions as an optimistic path forward. SUMMARY:Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints
DESCRIPTION:This March\, step into a world where nature-themed prints meet Portland Japanese Garden’s springtime vibrance in Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints. Featuring the art of mokuhanga (木版画)\, Japanese-style woodblock printmaking\, this exhibition reveals how a centuries-old tradition is experiencing a contemporary revival among artists around the world\, who use the quiet power and unique characteristics of woodblock printmaking to create captivating works of art. Mokuhanga has been embraced by artists as an environmentally friendly art form that uses wood\, water-based pigments\, and paper made from plant fibers. The exhibition’s featured artists are among the growing international movement where meticulously crafted art prints incorporating these traditional tools and techniques are complemented by alternative printmaking technologies and strategies for contemporary expression. This exhibition marks the Garden’s first collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art and is co-curated by Stephen Salel\, the Museum’s Curator of Japanese Art. Across the galleries at Portland Japanese Garden\, Enduring Impressions presents an eclectic range of contemporary prints\, custom-made for the show\,  alongside a behind-the-scenes look at the process\, history and future of this iconic art form. DESCRIPTION:Explore pressed flowers\, symbolism\, and the first signs of awakening!\nThis early-spring session celebrates Hoyt Arboretum’s landscape as it reawakens—especially the magnolia and emerging buds. Using pressed plants\, flowers\, and delicate collage techniques\, we explore themes of emergence\, renewal\, and balance as the Earth invites us to reinvent ourselves in tune with the Spring season. You will learn: How to create collages and visual poems using pressed botanicals – The symbolism of early spring blooms and cultural celebrations of the Spring Equinox (magnolia\, trilliums\, snowdrops\, and more) – Creative prompts that invite balance and personal renewal at the Equinox. You will leave with: A spring botanical collage or visual poem – A personal self-note for the season of renewal – A renewed sense of hope\, softness\, and alignment with nature’s cycles. DESCRIPTION:Dive into what you want to express and the direction your life is calling you. This workshop helps you shake off what’s complete and make space for the new energy rising within you. With the generous\, stabilizing support of the trees\, you’ll explore what is unfolding in your life. Using the Tree Transformation Oracle Deck\, each participant will receive a few personal cards to illuminate insights\, patterns\, and next steps. We’ll deepen this guidance through meditation\, visualization\, and presence practices among the trees. Being in the forest amplifies everything—clarity\, intuition\, and connection—so we will spend time outdoors as weather allows\, with sheltered space available as needed. SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Oregon Koto-Kai
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto performance by Oregon Koto-Kai at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Oregon Koto-Kai is a group passionate about the Japanese koto\, a 13-stringed zither with over 1000 years of history. Founded by Mitsuki Dazai in February 2012\, the ensemble performed its first concert in Portland\, Oregon. Since then\, they have performed throughout the state at venues like the Portland Japanese Garden\, Portland Rose Festival\, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Their mission is to introduce Japanese koto music to the broader community by providing concerts and lessons. They collaborate with local musicians\, improve players’ skills\, and contribute to the culture. This performance is included with garden admission.
