In this moment of climate uncertainty\, World Forestry Center is leveraging creativity\, art\, and storytelling to spotlight forest-based solutions as an optimistic path forward. Forest Hope Through Innovation is designed to spark climate hope and inspire community-based approaches that support resilient forests for generations to come. Included with museum admission.

SUMMARY:Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints
DESCRIPTION:This March\, step into a world where nature-themed prints meet Portland Japanese Garden’s springtime vibrance in Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints. Featuring the art of mokuhanga (木版画)\, Japanese-style woodblock printmaking\, this exhibition reveals how a centuries-old tradition is experiencing a contemporary revival among artists around the world\, who use the quiet power and unique characteristics of woodblock printmaking to create captivating works of art. Mokuhanga has been embraced by artists as an environmentally friendly art form that uses wood\, water-based pigments\, and paper made from plant fibers. The exhibition’s featured artists are among the growing international movement where meticulously crafted art prints incorporating these traditional tools and techniques are complemented by alternative printmaking technologies and strategies for contemporary expression. This exhibition marks the Garden’s first collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art and is co-curated by Stephen Salel\, the Museum’s Curator of Japanese Art. Across the galleries at Portland Japanese Garden\, Enduring Impressions presents an eclectic range of contemporary prints\, custom-made for the show\,  alongside a behind-the-scenes look at the process\, history and future of this iconic art form. SUMMARY:Sogetsu Portland Rose Show
DESCRIPTION:See stunning works created by local ikebana artists featuring Portland‘s favorite flower as the city celebrates its beloved tradition\, the Rose Festival. The Sogetsu School of Ikebana believes ikebana can be practiced anytime\, anywhere\, by anyone. Local artists from the Sogetsu Portland Branch will create a wide range of styles from basic to abstract which use objects of sculptural intent and character. The three main elements designers use are line\, mass\, and color\, with an emphasis on the designer’s individual artistic expression and creativity. Visit the Garden to see how their arrangements both suit and enhance the Yanai Classroom in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center.  Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Member Only Mindfulness Tour
DESCRIPTION:This intimate tour focuses not on meditation\, but instead on learning to bring mindful awareness to oneself\, and the world around us\, through intentional observation and connections. An experienced guide will provide a foundation for the art of contemplative exploration throughout various Garden spaces\, and gently guide awareness away from the busyness of everyday life\, back toward the connection to nature and experience of peace. Each tour will be slightly unique to focus on the current season\, weather (occurs rain or shine)\, and garden spaces. However\, these tours are designed and intended to help members continue to enhance future Garden visits through independent mindful practice through all seasons. Reservations required.

DESCRIPTION:Explore one of Hoyt Arboretum’s three nationally-accredited collections with a knowledgeable guide. Public Tours will follow seasonal routes to highlight the flowering trees and the Magnolia Collection in the spring\, the Conifer Collection in the summer\, and fall color and the Maple Collection in the fall. Public tours are free and coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum Friends. There is no fee to attend\, but donations are appreciated and support education programs at Hoyt Arboretum. SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Ikebana by Nana Bellerud
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation by Nana Bellerud from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder\, Sofu Teshigahara\, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere\, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle\, appreciated by many people from all over the world\, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people. This demonstration is included with garden admission.
