DESCRIPTION:This March\, step into a world where nature-themed prints meet Portland Japanese Garden’s springtime vibrance in Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints. Featuring the art of mokuhanga (木版画)\, Japanese-style woodblock printmaking\, this exhibition reveals how a centuries-old tradition is experiencing a contemporary revival among artists around the world\, who use the quiet power and unique characteristics of woodblock printmaking to create captivating works of art. Mokuhanga has been embraced by artists as an environmentally friendly art form that uses wood\, water-based pigments\, and paper made from plant fibers. The exhibition’s featured artists are among the growing international movement where meticulously crafted art prints incorporating these traditional tools and techniques are complemented by alternative printmaking technologies and strategies for contemporary expression. This exhibition marks the Garden’s first collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art and is co-curated by Stephen Salel\, the Museum’s Curator of Japanese Art. Across the galleries at Portland Japanese Garden\, Enduring Impressions presents an eclectic range of contemporary prints\, custom-made for the show\,  alongside a behind-the-scenes look at the process\, history and future of this iconic art form. SUMMARY:A Journey in Moments: Photography by Daniel Ng
DESCRIPTION:Visit Portland Japanese Garden this summer to see an exhibition of stunning photography by one of our members! The sights and scenes one encounters while traveling\, though fleeting\, can nevertheless leave an impression that resonate throughout the course of a life. For its inaugural Garden Gallery exhibition\, Portland Japanese Garden is thrilled to present A Journey in Moments: The Photography of Daniel Ng\, on display from May 28 through August 10. Ng is a Photographer Member whose work was selected through a Call for Photography issued in early 2026. Travelogue-inspired and vibrant in color and composition\, Ng’s work was taken over the course of a 2024 trip to Japan as well as during visits to the Garden during Photographer Hours. Ng’s photography invites contemplation of the subtle beauty encountered in the everyday\, and the impact of thoughtful exchange across cultures. From the serene lines of Japanese temple architecture and the gentle clouds of sakura blossoms in a clear sky\, to the natural patterns of street traffic in bustling Tokyo\, Ng captures scenes across a spectrum of peace and excitement familiar to visitors to Japan\, inviting the viewer to dream of returning again and again. With 189-acres and more than 6\,000 trees along 12 miles of trails\, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system\, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world. Hosted by Friends of Hoyt Arboretum\, this experience begins with a relaxed introduction to color theory\, where you’ll paint a watercolor color wheel and mix your own custom greens. Then we’ll step outside and wander into the arboretum\, sketchbooks in hand\, to capture the incredible variety of greens found in leaves\, needles\, ferns\, and more. Whether you’re a watercolor beginner\, a tree enthusiast\, or just looking for a fresh way to connect with nature\, this workshop invites you to slow down\, observe closely\, and maybe even turn over a new leaf in your creative practice. You’ll leave with new painting skills\, a deeper appreciation for the forest\, and a whole new way of seeing green on your next hike. SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Ikebana by Nana Bellerud
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation by Nana Bellerud from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder\, Sofu Teshigahara\, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere\, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle\, appreciated by many people from all over the world\, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people.
