Featuring work by more than twelve innovators\, the exhibition highlights the aesthetics of emerging forest-based research—from technology and engineering to design and artist-scientist collaborations. In this moment of climate uncertainty\, World Forestry Center is leveraging creativity\, art\, and storytelling to spotlight forest-based solutions as an optimistic path forward. Forest Hope Through Innovation is designed to spark climate hope and inspire community-based approaches that support resilient forests for generations to come. Included with museum admission.

SUMMARY:Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints
DESCRIPTION:This March\, step into a world where nature-themed prints meet Portland Japanese Garden’s springtime vibrance in Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints. Featuring the art of mokuhanga (木版画)\, Japanese-style woodblock printmaking\, this exhibition reveals how a centuries-old tradition is experiencing a contemporary revival among artists around the world\, who use the quiet power and unique characteristics of woodblock printmaking to create captivating works of art. Mokuhanga has been embraced by artists as an environmentally friendly art form that uses wood\, water-based pigments\, and paper made from plant fibers. The exhibition’s featured artists are among the growing international movement where meticulously crafted art prints incorporating these traditional tools and techniques are complemented by alternative printmaking technologies and strategies for contemporary expression. This exhibition marks the Garden’s first collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art and is co-curated by Stephen Salel\, the Museum’s Curator of Japanese Art. Across the galleries at Portland Japanese Garden\, Enduring Impressions presents an eclectic range of contemporary prints\, custom-made for the show\,  alongside a behind-the-scenes look at the process\, history and future of this iconic art form. SUMMARY:A Journey in Moments: Photography by Daniel Ng
DESCRIPTION:Visit Portland Japanese Garden this summer to see an exhibition of stunning photography by one of our members! The sights and scenes one encounters while traveling\, though fleeting\, can nevertheless leave an impression that resonate throughout the course of a life. For its inaugural Garden Gallery exhibition\, Portland Japanese Garden is thrilled to present A Journey in Moments: The Photography of Daniel Ng\, on display from May 28 through August 10. Ng is a Photographer Member whose work was selected through a Call for Photography issued in early 2026. Travelogue-inspired and vibrant in color and composition\, Ng’s work was taken over the course of a 2024 trip to Japan as well as during visits to the Garden during Photographer Hours. Ng’s photography invites contemplation of the subtle beauty encountered in the everyday\, and the impact of thoughtful exchange across cultures. From the serene lines of Japanese temple architecture and the gentle clouds of sakura blossoms in a clear sky\, to the natural patterns of street traffic in bustling Tokyo\, Ng captures scenes across a spectrum of peace and excitement familiar to visitors to Japan\, inviting the viewer to dream of returning again and again. SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Shinobue Flute\, Tsugaru Shamisen\, and Piano by Maido Mind
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute\, Tsugaru shamisen and a piano performance by Maido Mind. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugaru shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. Included with garden admission.
