SUMMARY:A Journey in Moments: Photography by Daniel Ng
DESCRIPTION:Visit Portland Japanese Garden this summer to see an exhibition of stunning photography by one of our members! The sights and scenes one encounters while traveling\, though fleeting\, can nevertheless leave an impression that resonate throughout the course of a life. For its inaugural Garden Gallery exhibition\, Portland Japanese Garden is thrilled to present A Journey in Moments: The Photography of Daniel Ng\, on display from May 28 through August 10. Ng is a Photographer Member whose work was selected through a Call for Photography issued in early 2026. Travelogue-inspired and vibrant in color and composition\, Ng’s work was taken over the course of a 2024 trip to Japan as well as during visits to the Garden during Photographer Hours. Ng’s photography invites contemplation of the subtle beauty encountered in the everyday\, and the impact of thoughtful exchange across cultures. From the serene lines of Japanese temple architecture and the gentle clouds of sakura blossoms in a clear sky\, to the natural patterns of street traffic in bustling Tokyo\, Ng captures scenes across a spectrum of peace and excitement familiar to visitors to Japan\, inviting the viewer to dream of returning again and again. Included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to care for Hoyt Arboretum’s trees and trails with the Saturday Crew! With 189-acres and more than 6\,000 trees along 12 miles of trails\, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system\, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world. No previous stewardship crew experience is required; training\, tools\, gloves\, and volunteer parking passes are provided. Registration is required through the Hoyt Arboretum website.

SUMMARY:Hike with Hoyt
DESCRIPTION:Explore Hoyt Arboretum’s trails on a guided hike! Learn the trails\, see the Arboretum’s highlights\, and meet a new community of outdoor enthusiasts. Reserve your spot in-person the day of the hike at the front desk inside the Visitor Center. Each hike is limited to 15 participants. Hikers should expect to cover up to 4 miles on a mix of packed dirt\, gravel\, and paved trails. The hiking pace will be approximately 2 miles per hour. Hoyt Arboretum’s trails are well-graded but there is some elevation change (and occasionally stairs). Hikes will last 90 minutes to 2 hours and take place rain or shine. Please come dressed for the weather\, including appropriate footwear and rain gear if needed. Hikers should also bring water\, snacks\, and any other personal items they note. Please note that we do have bees in the park\, and stings can happen. Please bring whatever you need to be safe. No dogs on guided hikes due to the size of the group. Service dogs who are task-trained are welcome.

SUMMARY:Brainy Birds: Summer
DESCRIPTION:Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum\, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And\, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum\, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. This event is coordinated byt Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Kashintei Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer a free public demonstration of Chado\, the Way of Tea\, in the Kashintei Tea House (in the Tea Garden) from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. Kashintei (literally “Flower-Heart Room”) is the name of the authentic Tea House that sits in the heart of our Tea Garden. The structure was made in Japan\, shipped in pieces\, and reassembled in the Garden. Tea houses are composed of several strictly defined spaces: the anteroom [mizuya]\, where the utensils for the ceremony are readied beforehand; the sitting room [zashiki]\, where the tea ceremony is performed; the alcove [tokonoma] where flowers and a calligraphy scroll are displayed.  Four-and-a-half tatami mats\, which are the standard dimensions of a traditional tea house\, cover the floor. Included with garden admission.
