SUMMARY:Bonsai Society of Portland Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden welcomes the Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) for a bonsai exhibition in the Yanai Classroom\, located in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Bonsai\, which literally translates to “tree-in-a-tray\,” is the art and science of miniature trees.\nLiteral translation aside\, “bonsai” has evolved to mean an artistically shaped woody plant that is intended to suggest the image of a mature tree in nature. The creation of a miniaturized\nlandscape fulfills the human yearning for a connection to nature in the smallest of spaces.

SUMMARY:Living Traditions 2025: The Future of Social Resiliency and Natural Environment
DESCRIPTION:Join Japan Institute of Portland Japanese Garden at the World Forestry Center in our shared home of Washington Park for the second in-person installment of Living Traditions\, a series of conversations and talks that explore some of the most iconic facets of Japanese culture. \n“The Future of Social Resiliency and Natural Environment” will explore new frontiers in the cultural fusion of American ingenuity\, technology\, and craftsmanship with Japanese aesthetics. Keynote speaker Hitoshi Abe is a leader in diverse architectural projects bridging Japan and the U.S. and will be among those who speak to how multi-culturalism can foster resiliency in the international community. Joining Abe in this forum will be a panel discussion featuring luminary speakers including Sadafumi Uchiyama\, landscape architect and Curator Emeritus of Portland Japanese Garden. Frank Feltens (Curator of Japanese Art at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art) will moderate this dialogue on how social infrastructure such as art\, gardens\, and other public spaces can create a safer environment and creative civic discourse.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Engi no li Mono (Auspicious Items) in Ikebana for the New Year
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the harmony of nature and Japanese tradition through the art of ikebana. Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “the way of flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for a New Year’s focused ikebana presentation on auspicious items in ikebana by Rumiko Fadden and David Komeiji of the Saga Goryu Ikebana North American Branch in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. In Japanese culture\, the concept of “engi no ii mono” (縁起のいいもの) refers to items or symbols believed to bring good fortune\, happiness\, or positive outcomes. These items have deep cultural and spiritual significance and are often incorporated into seasonal traditions\, festivals\, and artistic expressions like ikebana. By incorporating these auspicious elements into an ikebana arrangement\, we connect with traditional values and invite blessings into our lives.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Hatsugama Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chadō\, the Way of Tea\, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm. In honor of the New Year\, Jan Waldmann will present a special Japanese tea ceremony known as Hatsugama (初釜). The kanji\, or Japanese characters\, for Hatsugama mean “first/new” and “kettle.” For tea teachers and students\, the first kettle (or tea ceremony) of the new year happens in a festive event between January 1 and 11th when the tea master reverses roles and serves tea to all their students. SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Steve Bloom\, Chief Executive Officer of Portland Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Yanai Classroom for a fireside chat with our CEO\, Steve Bloom\, as he reflects on almost 20 years at Portland Japanese Garden. Since his hiring in 2005\, Bloom has dramatically transformed the organization from a humble\, local garden that hosted infrequent programming into an internationally renowned garden and preeminent cultural institution. His efforts include the Cultural Crossing Expansion Project (which expanded the Garden from 5.5 to 12.5 acres) and the establishment of a curatorial department to improve and strengthen the Garden’s physical landscape as well as host worldclass programming and events. In 2022\, he led the creation of Japan Institute\, a global cultural initiative and sibling organization that has connected Portland with visionaries across every continent in the fields of gardening\, art\, design\, and diplomacy. In recognition for his work\, Bloom has been the recipient of several honors\, including the Foreign Minister’s Commendations from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Kintsugi and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Explore how art fosters reconciliation and social integration\, through a panel discussion featuring insights from three global visionary leaders—Maria Elisa Pinto-Garcia (Colombia)\, Lungi Morrison (South Africa)\, and Toc Soneoulay-Gillespie (Laos and Oregon). Through a close look at practical applications of the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics with gold\, kintsugi (金継ぎ)\, and the Heart Maps methodology of using dialogue and drawings to positively shift perspectives and stereotypes\, the conversation will highlight the transformative power of art and creativity to heal\, repair and reimagine aspects of our humanity that may otherwise be labeled as “broken”.
