SUMMARY:Tai Chi (outside)
DESCRIPTION:Many tai chi moves use images from nature—stable as a pine\, flowing like a river\, hands moving as clouds. Enjoying tai chi in the Arboretum allows us to connect deeply to that imagery. Each week we will explore a few tai chi moves which are relaxing\, help improve focus and balance\, and nurture rooted in the moment. No experience is necessary\, only an interest in exploring the many benefits of tai chi. Class size is limited to 10 participants; registration is required.\nAbout the Instructor: Jim Dalton has been teaching Tai Chi for Better Balance for more than 15 years. He has worked in senior centers and recreational venues teaching QiGong and Mindful Movement workshops all over the city. During the last two years he sustained his practice with his students both outside and online. He continues to teach 2 or 3 classes per week\, both beginning and intermediate level Tai Chi and QiGong. \nMember Price: $5.00\, Non-Member Price: $8.00 If you qualify for an Oregon income assistance program\, please email nina@hoytarboretum.org for details about further discounted program rates.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Experience a two-hour guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing (also known as Forest Therapy) offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support.\nForest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. \nAbout the Instructor: Ellen Weeks is a native Oregonian with a deep love for the forests of the Pacific Northwest. She holds an M.S. degree in Education from Portland State University\, and is a certified Forest Therapy Guide by the Associate of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). The practice of forest bathing expands how ?she encounter?s? the natural world\, resulting in even deeper relations to not just the wilderness and its inhabitants\, but to ?f?ellow humans. \nMember Cost: $20.00\, Non-Member Cost $25.00 \nIf you qualify for an Oregon income assistance program\, please email nina@hoytarboretum.org for details about further discounted program rates.
