DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto performance by Oregon Koto-Kai at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The standard Koto is a thirteen-string plucked zither introduced to Japan in the 7th century. It has been part of the Gagaku court ensemble for over a thousand years\, becoming popular among the merchant classes in the Edo period (1600-1868). An important member of the traditional Sankyoku ensemble\, along with the three-string Shamisen and Shakuhachi (bamboo flute)\, the Koto developed further in a solo capacity\, eventually becoming one of Japan’s most prominent musical instruments. Today\, its varied repertoire and wide range of playing techniques provide a rich palette of sound textures\, making the Koto appealing to audiences worldwide. Learn more about Koto. SUMMARY:Greater Portland Iris Society Show
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the elegant beauty of irises on June 14\, 2026. The Greater Portland Iris Society will present a show of two varieties of late season irises: iris ensata (Japanese iris) and spuria. Native to Japan\, Iris ensata is commonly known as “Japanese iris” outside of Japan. In Japan\, 花菖蒲 (hanashobu) have been cultivated for over 500 years. Oregon and Washington are home to three of the nine specialty nurseries specializing in Japanese irises in the United States. Spuria\, according to the American Iris Society’s encyclopedia\, “are tall (2 to 5 feet in height) and elegant\, and have very attractive foliage.” As the Garden transforms into a picturesque greenscape\, the Japanese iris provide a pop of color as the harbinger of summer. The buds open in late June to reveal flowers nearly six inches across in shades of purple and white. Symbolizing purity and innocence\, the narrow iris leaf resembles the shape of a samurai sword blade. This event is included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:This intimate tour focuses not on meditation\, but instead on learning to bring mindful awareness to oneself\, and the world around us\, through intentional observation and connections. An experienced guide will provide a foundation for the art of contemplative exploration throughout various Garden spaces\, and gently guide awareness away from the busyness of everyday life\, back toward the connection to nature and experience of peace. Each tour will be slightly unique to focus on the current season\, weather (occurs rain or shine)\, and garden spaces. However\, these tours are designed and intended to help members continue to enhance future Garden visits through independent mindful practice through all seasons. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute\, Tsugaru shamisen and a piano performance by Maido Mind. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugaru shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation by Nana Bellerud from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder\, Sofu Teshigahara\, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere\, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle\, appreciated by many people from all over the world\, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people. DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with textile artisan Judilee Fitzhugh to offer a series of four immersive textile workshops. In each session\, participants will relax and enjoy the rhythmic dance of needle and thread while learning the meditative art of hand-stitching to create Japanese- and garden-inspired projects. This workshop runs from 9:30am–4:00pm\, including six hours of instruction and a 30-minute lunch break. Participation is limited to 20 students per workshop\, and classes are open to students of all levels of sewing experience.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chadō\, the Way of Tea\, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony is a manner of preparing and drinking a bowl of tea. More than just making tea\, it reflects the Japanese sense of omotenashi\, or wholehearted hospitality. It involves choreographed movements where both the host and guest escape the fast pace of life and experience calm. Included with garden admission.

In this moment of climate uncertainty\, World Forestry Center is leveraging creativity\, art\, and storytelling to spotlight forest-based solutions as an optimistic path forward. SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Ikebana by Nana Bellerud
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation by Nana Bellerud from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder\, Sofu Teshigahara\, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere\, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle\, appreciated by many people from all over the world\, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people. This demonstration is included with garden admission.

An experienced guide will provide a foundation for the art of contemplative exploration throughout various Garden spaces\, and gently guide awareness away from the busyness of everyday life\, back toward the connection to nature and experience of peace. DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Oregon Koto-Kai
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto performance by Oregon Koto-Kai at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Oregon Koto-Kai is a group passionate about the Japanese koto\, a 13-stringed zither with over 1000 years of history. Founded by Mitsuki Dazai in February 2012\, the ensemble performed its first concert in Portland\, Oregon. Since then\, they have performed throughout the state at venues like the Portland Japanese Garden\, Portland Rose Festival\, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Their mission is to introduce Japanese koto music to the broader community by providing concerts and lessons. They collaborate with local musicians\, improve players’ skills\, and contribute to the cultural landscape. This performance is included with garden admission.
