SUMMARY:Earthen Elegance: The Ceramic Art of Bizen
DESCRIPTION:This February\, Portland Japanese Garden is pleased to present Earthen Elegance: The Ceramic Art of Bizen in the Pavilion Gallery. On loan from the Collection of David Sneider and Naomi Pollock\, this exhibition celebrates contemporary ceramic art and vessels that preserve a time-honored collaboration of earth\, fire\, and the artist’s hand. Recognized as one of the Rokkoyō (六石窯) Six Ancient Kilns of Japan\, Bizen is a ceramic center that has continued its unique form of pottery for over 900 years. Notable for their rustic\, textured\, and unglazed forms\, the ceramics featured in Earthen Elegance reveal the depths of the Bizen pottery tradition. Today the town of Bizen hosts nearly 300 active kilns with artists continuing to use local materials and an ancient wood-firing process. Featuring work by many of Bizen’s leading potters including Jun Isezaki and Ryuichi Kakurezaki\, the exhibition presents both functional vessels and innovative sculptural forms that expand the frontier of Bizen ware.

SUMMARY:Sasquatch: Ancestral Guardians
DESCRIPTION:“We must walk lightly when we are between worlds with this sacred being.” – Phillip Cash Cash Indigenous peoples have long been in relationship with and shared stories about sacred forest protectors\, often called Sasquatch and Bigfoot. The works in this exhibition are made by Indigenous artists and honor generations of spiritual practices\, storytelling\, and tradition. Leave your preconceived notions behind and immerse yourself\, not in the question of if Sasquatch exists\, but rather\, how are we existing with and honoring this non-human other.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Tanabata\, The Star Festival
DESCRIPTION:Tanabata\, the Star Festival\, is one of five seasonal festivals that has been celebrated in Japan since the eighth century. Each summer in Japan\, people prepare for the festival by writing their wishes on narrow strips of paper called tanzaku and hanging them with other origami paper ornaments on bamboo branches displayed at the entrance to their homes and public places. Guests attending Portland Japanese Garden’s Tanabata celebration will be invited to the Yanai Family Classroom to write their own wishes on tanzaku. Volunteers will be present to assist guests with hanging their tanzaku on the bamboo in the Crumpacker Bamboo Allee\, adding to the colorful display. The festival will also feature music from Takohachi and storytelling of the Tanabata story. Included with garden admission.
