DESCRIPTION:This March\, step into a world where nature-themed prints meet Portland Japanese Garden’s springtime vibrance in Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints. Featuring the art of mokuhanga (木版画)\, Japanese-style woodblock printmaking\, this exhibition reveals how a centuries-old tradition is experiencing a contemporary revival among artists around the world\, who use the quiet power and unique characteristics of woodblock printmaking to create captivating works of art. Mokuhanga has been embraced by artists as an environmentally friendly art form that uses wood\, water-based pigments\, and paper made from plant fibers. The exhibition’s featured artists are among the growing international movement where meticulously crafted art prints incorporating these traditional tools and techniques are complemented by alternative printmaking technologies and strategies for contemporary expression. This exhibition marks the Garden’s first collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art and is co-curated by Stephen Salel\, the Museum’s Curator of Japanese Art. Across the galleries at Portland Japanese Garden\, Enduring Impressions presents an eclectic range of contemporary prints\, custom-made for the show\,  alongside a behind-the-scenes look at the process\, history and future of this iconic art form. SUMMARY:A Journey in Moments: Photography by Daniel Ng
DESCRIPTION:Visit Portland Japanese Garden this summer to see an exhibition of stunning photography by one of our members! The sights and scenes one encounters while traveling\, though fleeting\, can nevertheless leave an impression that resonate throughout the course of a life. For its inaugural Garden Gallery exhibition\, Portland Japanese Garden is thrilled to present A Journey in Moments: The Photography of Daniel Ng\, on display from May 28 through August 10. Ng is a Photographer Member whose work was selected through a Call for Photography issued in early 2026. Travelogue-inspired and vibrant in color and composition\, Ng’s work was taken over the course of a 2024 trip to Japan as well as during visits to the Garden during Photographer Hours. Ng’s photography invites contemplation of the subtle beauty encountered in the everyday\, and the impact of thoughtful exchange across cultures. From the serene lines of Japanese temple architecture and the gentle clouds of sakura blossoms in a clear sky\, to the natural patterns of street traffic in bustling Tokyo\, Ng captures scenes across a spectrum of peace and excitement familiar to visitors to Japan\, inviting the viewer to dream of returning again and again. DESCRIPTION:During this 2-hour sensory photography walk at Hoyt Arboretum\, we will follow morning light as the sun slowly rises through the landscape\, revealing tiny worlds\, glowing leaves\, and quiet details that often go unnoticed. This experience is an invitation to slow down and learn how to see with attention\, presence\, and curiosity. Your camera (digital or analog) or phone becomes a tool for noticing.  As light gradually enters the Arboretum’s coves of sequoias and redwoods\, sun turns the forest into a “cathedral built by bark and leaves\,” as John Steinbeck wrote in Travels with Charley. Together\, we will explore how sunlight transforms textures\, shapes\, and colors — and how to translate those sensations into poetic images. By the end of the walk\, you will leave with new ways of seeing Hoyt Arboretum and its diverse ecosystem and a small collection of vibrant\, nature-inspired images. DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chadō\, the Way of Tea\, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony is a manner of preparing and drinking a bowl of tea. More than just making tea\, it reflects the Japanese sense of omotenashi\, or wholehearted hospitality. It involves choreographed movements where both the host and guest escape the fast pace of life and experience calm. Included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute\, Tsugaru shamisen and a piano performance by Maido Mind. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugaru shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. SUMMARY:Member Mindfulness Tour
DESCRIPTION:This intimate tour focuses not on meditation\, but instead on learning to bring mindful awareness to oneself\, and the world around us\, through intentional observation and connections. An experienced guide will provide a foundation for the art of contemplative exploration throughout various Garden spaces\, and gently guide awareness away from the busyness of everyday life\, back toward the connection to nature and experience of peace. Each tour will be slightly unique to focus on the current season\, weather (occurs rain or shine)\, and garden spaces. However\, these tours are designed and intended to help members continue to enhance future Garden visits through independent mindful practice through all seasons. Tours will begin in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard starting at 9:00am\, and typically last about 45-60 minutes. Reservations required.

SUMMARY:Botanical Illustration: Hoyt's Herbarium Collection Comes To Life
DESCRIPTION:Join Brett Rousseau as she leads you through the journey of creating watercolor botanical illustrations based on HoytArboretum’s very own herbarium collection. We will use herbarium “vouchers” (plant samples that are pressed\, dried\, and mounted for cataloging Hoyt’s collection) as our muse. We will capture their leaves\, stems\, flowers\, and fruits with our imagination and paint brush. This is a great stepping stone to painting plants from life. SUMMARY:Greater Portland Iris Society Show
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the elegant beauty of irises on June 14\, 2026. The Greater Portland Iris Society will present a show of two varieties of late season irises: iris ensata (Japanese iris) and spuria. Native to Japan\, Iris ensata is commonly known as “Japanese iris” outside of Japan. In Japan\, 花菖蒲 (hanashobu) have been cultivated for over 500 years. Oregon and Washington are home to three of the nine specialty nurseries specializing in Japanese irises in the United States. Spuria\, according to the American Iris Society’s encyclopedia\, “are tall (2 to 5 feet in height) and elegant\, and have very attractive foliage.” As the Garden transforms into a picturesque greenscape\, the Japanese iris provide a pop of color as the harbinger of summer. The buds open in late June to reveal flowers nearly six inches across in shades of purple and white. Symbolizing purity and innocence\, the narrow iris leaf resembles the shape of a samurai sword blade. This event is included with garden admission.

Public Tours will follow seasonal routes to highlight the flowering trees and the Magnolia Collection in the spring\, the Conifer Collection in the summer\, and fall color and the Maple Collection in the fall. Public tours are free and coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum Friends. There is no fee to attend\, but donations are appreciated and support education programs at Hoyt Arboretum. SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Oregon Koto-Kai
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto performance by Oregon Koto-Kai at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The standard Koto is a thirteen-string plucked zither introduced to Japan in the 7th century. It has been part of the Gagaku court ensemble for over a thousand years\, becoming popular among the merchant classes in the Edo period (1600-1868). An important member of the traditional Sankyoku ensemble\, along with the three-string Shamisen and Shakuhachi (bamboo flute)\, the Koto developed further in a solo capacity\, eventually becoming one of Japan’s most prominent musical instruments. Today\, its varied repertoire and wide range of playing techniques provide a rich palette of sound textures\, making the Koto appealing to audiences worldwide. Learn more about Koto. SUMMARY:Trees For All: Paved Trail Public Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Trees For All Public Tour explores Hoyt Arboretum from accessible paved trails. The tour loops around the Visitor Center and parking lot and then continutes onto the Overlook Trail. A gentle incline leads to an optional lookout point with a (weather-permitting) view of Mt. Saint Helens and Mt. Rainier. Tour highlights include oaks\, beeches\, native shrubs and conifers\, and an overview of the conservation and community science work conducted by the Arboretum. This tour is reserved for people who are disabled\, chronically ill\, neurodivergent\, and/or have lived experience of any disability\, broadly defined. Supportive family\, friends\, and caregivers are also welcome. This tour is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum and registration is required through their website.
