SUMMARY:Living Fossils of the Tree World
DESCRIPTION:“Living fossils” generally refer to those taxa (organisms of a named lineage) that are alive today\, have been documented in the fossil record for an unusually long time\, and have seemingly experienced little change over time. At Hoyt Arboretum\, we have several tree species considered to be “living fossils.” Some are well-known plants that simply appear to be morphologically unchanged for a very long time and are recognized from the wild or cultivated. Others were thought to be extinct and known only from the fossil record\, until living populations were (re-)discovered by scientists. Come prepared to walk as we visit many of these distinctive trees.

SUMMARY:Winter Plant ID
DESCRIPTION:Portland is fortunately very green in the winter due to evergreen trees\, ferns\, and moss. Other plants\, however\, are bare and make identification more of a mystery. Join this class to learn the clues to search for that make plant identification more manageable in the colder months. Class will start in the library with a brief presentation along with samples of key features to search for when identifying deciduous plants in the winter. Then bundle-up and walk outside during the remainder of time to practice identification on the trails with your instructor.

SUMMARY:Modern Kintsugi Workshop with Emi Joyce
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with Emi Joyce\, a Portland-based kintsugi restorer and instructor\, to provide two modern kintsugi workshops on November 9. Kintsugi (金継ぎ\, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. In this centuries-old practice\, fractures transform from hidden weak points into beautiful golden elements worth celebrating. The philosophy of kintsugi teaches us to embrace imperfections in our life and appreciate the beauty of human flaws. While the traditional method used by experts is challenging and requires cautious handling of materials like urushi lacquer\, the “modern” kintsugi method uses accessible materials and is ideal for beginners. The Garden is thrilled to offer this opportunity for its guests to get hands-on experience with this beloved artform as it simultaneously presents its final art exhibition of 2024\, Kintsugi: The Restorative Art of Naoko Fukumaru.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Following Fire\, A Resilient Forest / An Uncertain Future
DESCRIPTION:World Forestry Center presents Following Fire\, A Resilient Forest / An Uncertain Future. In September 2020\, the Holiday Farm Fire\, driven by fierce east winds\, burned 173\,000 acres along the forested McKenzie River canyon in the Cascade Range of Oregon. Two months later\, in an impulsive response\, photographer David Paul Bayles and disturbance ecologist Frederick Swanson began a photography project to document the stark beauty of the burned forest and its vibrant response to fire. The event will be held in the art gallery of the Discovery Museum and the artists will be present. Please RSVP to save your free spot.
