SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Experience a two-hour guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing (also known as Forest Therapy) offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support.\nForest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. \nAbout the Instructor: Ellen Weeks is a native Oregonian with a deep love for the forests of the Pacific Northwest. She holds an M.S. degree in Education from Portland State University\, and is a certified Forest Therapy Guide by the Associate of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT). The practice of forest bathing expands how ?she encounter?s? the natural world\, resulting in even deeper relations to not just the wilderness and its inhabitants\, but to ?f?ellow humans. \nMember Cost: $20.00\, Non-Member Cost $25.00 \nIf you qualify for an Oregon income assistance program\, please email nina@hoytarboretum.org for details about further discounted program rates.

SUMMARY:Saturday Crew
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer at Hoyt Arboretum to care for our trees and trails with a variety of hands-on stewardship projects.\nProjects vary for each crew depending on the needs of the season\, but often include invasive species removal\, weeding and mulching\, trail maintenance\, and more. With 189-acres and more than 6\,000 trees along 12 miles of trails\, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system\, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world. \nStewardship crews occur rain or shine; volunteers should come dressed for the weather including long pants and sturdy\, closed-toed shoes. \nVolunteers should plan to bring a water bottle\, snacks\, and sun protection. \nNo previous stewardship crew experience is required; training\, tools\, gloves\, and volunteer parking passes are provided. Registration is required (crew size is limited). \nVolunteers will meet at the worksite; exact meeting location details will be sent out prior to the crew date. \nVolunteer Age Requirement \nVolunteers must be at least 16-years-old. Volunteers between the ages of 16 and 17-years-old are welcome to volunteer without an adult\, but an adult needs to sign their waiver form. \nQuestions? Please contact volunteer@hoytarboretum.org. Thank you for supporting Portland’s living museum of trees!
