SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chadō\, the Way of Tea\, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony is a manner of preparing and drinking a bowl of tea. More than just making tea\, it reflects the Japanese sense of omotenashi\, or wholehearted hospitality. It involves choreographed movements where both the host and guest escape the fast pace of life and experience calm. This demonstration is included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:BudBurst Community Science Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning about volunteering for community science at Hoyt Arboretum? Join Hoyt Arboretum’s plant taxonomist and herbarium curator Mandy Tu for an online Zoom training on Thursday\, February 12 from 10 to 11am to learn about how you can get involved with BudBurst\, a nationwide\, community science-driven effort to study the impact of climate change on plants. Volunteers monitor the timing of specific events in a plant’s life cycle (full bloom\, fruiting\, leaf fall\, etc.)\, record their observations\, and then share their data with BudBurst. At this training\, volunteers will learn about plant structures and phenology as well as how scientists are using the data collected by BudBurst community scientists. You’ll also learn about the specific plant species we’re studying at Hoyt Arboretum and how to record plant cycle observations. Individuals can participate in BudBurst independently but are encouraged to visit Hoyt Arboretum at least every other week during the growing season (approximately March through November) to make and record observations. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Brainy Birds
DESCRIPTION:Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum\, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And\, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum\, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Kimekomi Ningyo (Kimekomi Dolls)
DESCRIPTION:Kimekomi Ningyo (木目込人形) is a style of traditional Japanese doll made of wood dating back about 300 years. The artist making the doll tucks fabric into grooves on the wooden form to dress the doll. Come hear Gael Sapiro talk about the dolls and demonstrate on a work in progress from 1:15-2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The term kimekomi refers to the method of making dolls and translates as the “act of pushing something into grooves that have been cut in wood.” Dollmaker Gael Sapiro will discuss the history of the craft\, describe the tools she uses\, and share examples of her work. Leading up to our Doll’s Day Festival on March 1st\, Portland Japanese Garden celebrates dolls. Hina Matsuri\, also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day\, which is celebrated each year in Japan on March 3 to celebrate the happiness\, growth\, and good health of girls. This talk will take place near a traditional display of hina dolls\, featuring a 5-tiered display representing the Emperor and Empress with members of the Imperial Court. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Winter Tree Energy
DESCRIPTION:Winter draws us inward\, and the trees do the same. In this season\, evergreens become especially potent— their energy condensed\, vibrant\, and deeply palpable. In this workshop\, we’ll explore these winter currents through gentle Qigong\, Tree Transformation Cards\, and direct connection with three tree species: Douglas-fir\, cedar (deodar\, western red\, and incense)\, and redwood. Each tree has a distinctly different energy. You will receive simple guidance on how to meet a tree and experience the first moments when your energy naturally tunes to the tree’s steady\, present frequency. We’ll also touch on plant neuroscience—tree intelligence\, sensory perception\, and how trees respond to our presence. During your time with the trees\, you may feel an energetic or physical shift\, gain clarity\, or receive a message. These insights can be fleeting\, so bring a way to record them. Trees are aware of us\, and many people experience profound exchanges. Please dress warmly and bring layers so you can enjoy being outdoors in winter. Afterward\, we’ll return to the Hoyt office library for tea and optional sharing of experiences. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Hina Matsuri: Doll's Day
DESCRIPTION:Hina Matsuri\, also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day\, is celebrated each year in Japan on March 3 to celebrate the happiness\, growth\, and good health of girls. In Japan\, families with daughters mark the festival by displaying intricately crafted hina dolls dressed in ornate costumes several days before the festival. Visitors can view and take photos with a traditional display of hina dolls in the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. March 3 is also called Momo-no-Sekku\, or Peach Blossom Festival\, because according to the lunar calendar peach blossoms were in full bloom on this day. It was also believed that peach blossoms had the power to drive away evil spirits. Many families in Japan display sprigs of peach blossoms together with hina dolls. At Portland Japanese Garden\, an ikebana arrangement by Nana Bellerud\, President of Ikebana International Portland Chapter #47 and Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland\, will accompany the display.
