SUMMARY:Brainy Birds
DESCRIPTION:Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum\, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And\, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum\, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Shinobue Flute\, Tsugaru Shamisen & Piano Performance by Maido Mind
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute\, Tsugaru Shamisen and a piano performance by Maido Mind. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugara Shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Katazome with Traditional Pigment Dyes Workshop with Karen Illman Miller
DESCRIPTION:For 500 years\, Japanese kimono and textiles have been produced with paper stencils. Katazome is a Japanese technique of dyeing fabrics or paper using a resist paste made of rice flour applied to fabric through a stencil. “Kata” means pattern\, and “zome” means to dye. Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with Karen Illman Miller\, a Corvallis-based katazome artist who has worked in the artform since 1994\, to provide an introductory workshop. Miller describes katazome\, Japanese stencil dyeing\, as “a process more like printmaking than painting.” Many formal kimonos feature kamon\, family crests that often include simple nature motifs. Inspired by family crest designs\, participants will learn to cut traditional katazome stencils\, apply resist paste and stretch silk fabric in hoops in preparation for multicolor painting with soy based pigments.   Students will dye two different multi-colored crest designs on silk brocade fabric using the bingata style of katazome from Okinawa. The style is known for using bright mineral pigments and soymilk. Registration is required through the Portland Japanese Garden website.

SUMMARY:Hina Matsuri: Doll's Day
DESCRIPTION:Hina Matsuri\, also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day\, is celebrated each year in Japan on March 3 to celebrate the happiness\, growth\, and good health of girls. In Japan\, families with daughters mark the festival by displaying intricately crafted hina dolls dressed in ornate costumes several days before the festival. Visitors can view and take photos with a traditional display of hina dolls in the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. March 3 is also called Momo-no-Sekku\, or Peach Blossom Festival\, because according to the lunar calendar peach blossoms were in full bloom on this day. It was also believed that peach blossoms had the power to drive away evil spirits. Many families in Japan display sprigs of peach blossoms together with hina dolls. At Portland Japanese Garden\, an ikebana arrangement by Nana Bellerud\, President of Ikebana International Portland Chapter #47 and Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland\, will accompany the display.

SUMMARY:Winter Tree Energy
DESCRIPTION:Winter draws us inward\, and the trees do the same. In this season\, evergreens become especially potent— their energy condensed\, vibrant\, and deeply palpable. In this workshop\, we’ll explore these winter currents through gentle Qigong\, Tree Transformation Cards\, and direct connection with three tree species: Douglas-fir\, cedar (deodar\, western red\, and incense)\, and redwood. Each tree has a distinctly different energy. You will receive simple guidance on how to meet a tree and experience the first moments when your energy naturally tunes to the tree’s steady\, present frequency. We’ll also touch on plant neuroscience—tree intelligence\, sensory perception\, and how trees respond to our presence. During your time with the trees\, you may feel an energetic or physical shift\, gain clarity\, or receive a message. These insights can be fleeting\, so bring a way to record them. Trees are aware of us\, and many people experience profound exchanges. Please dress warmly and bring layers so you can enjoy being outdoors in winter. Afterward\, we’ll return to the Hoyt office library for tea and optional sharing of experiences. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.
