SUMMARY:Lost Freedom: A Memory with George Takei
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by autobiographical accounts of the incarceration of Japanese-American citizens in World War II\, Lost Freedom: A Memory weaves together music and spoken word in a profound exploration of a chilling time in American history. Actor\, author\, and activist\, George Takei (Star Trek)\, narrates his own story as one of the citizens forced from their homes and made to live in desolate camps thousands of miles away. Set to music by Oregon composer Kenji Bunch\, this poignant program will also include music by Oregon’s Japanese-American composer/percussionist Andy Akiho.

SUMMARY:Tea Ceremony Workshop: Learn the Role of the Guest with Jan Waldmann
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden’s Tea Ceremony Workshop offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditional practice of Chanoyu\, or the Way of Tea. Experience the art of tranquility\, mindfulness\, and omotenashi\, whole-hearted hospitality. It is not an exaggeration to say that through tea\, one can understand much of Japanese culture. Tea’s influence can be found in many of the nation’s most beloved artforms\, including arranging flowers\, calligraphy\, incense\, ceramics and lacquerware. Japanese gardens are also deeply intertwined with tea ceremony. The four principles of tea\, wa (harmony)\, kei (respect)\, sei (purity)\, and jaku (tranquility)\, are explored by the gardeners of Portland Japanese Garden in their work every day.

SUMMARY:Tree Transformation Card Readings
DESCRIPTION:Ground yourself while awakening energy within through guided Qigong movements. Then stroll to a special grove of trees featuring ginkgo\, Chinese and Japanese white pine\, Japanese red pine\, dawn redwood\, and others. There you will be guided through a tree reading that can focus on a specific area of concern\, or may simply open you to guidance and receiving messages. The Tree Cards—a uniquely accurate oracle—help bridge the connection to tree wisdom. These cards were inspired by meeting the trees in the Arboretum and discovering that each species carries a distinct energy and message. Bring a journal to capture your insights. If you have a deck of Tree Cards\, bring them along! A few loaner decks are available. There is also a special ticket price if you would like to purchase your own deck of cards for a discounted price for this class only. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.
