DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. It is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. Light snacks\, drinks\, and tea will be provided before the walk.  This event is free for members\, but class size is limited. Please register ahead on the Hoyt Arboretum website.

SUMMARY:Bonsai Society of Portland Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden welcomes the Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) for a bonsai exhibition in the both the Yanai Family Classroom\, located in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center\, and the Lemelson Studio. Bonsai\, which literally translates to “tree-in-a-tray\,” is the art and science of miniature trees. Literal translation aside\, “bonsai” has evolved to mean an artistically shaped woody plant that is intended to suggest the image of a mature tree in nature. The creation of a miniaturized landscape fulfills the human yearning for a connection to nature in the smallest of spaces. This exhibition will include dozens of bonsai from BSOP members’ private collections\, including several world-class examples of this ancient Japanese art form. Guests will see coniferous\, deciduous\, fruiting\, and flowering species\, ranging in size from three-foot-tall specimens to tiny shohin trees small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Shohin will be on display in the Lemelson Studio. Included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:This hands-on art class introduces you to the creative process of making resin jewelry using UV resin\, pigments\, polymer clay\, and pressed natural elements. The workshop will begin with a casual nature walk to gather inspiration and learn about some PNW native plants before moving into the studio portion. Back inside you will explore fundamental resin techniques\, experiment with color blending\, try out clay sculpting to incorporate into the resin pieces\, and practice embedding natural materials. The workshop emphasizes creativity\, craftsmanship\, and the joy of working with both natural and handmade elements. Each student will leave with at least three finished pieces of jewelry—such as a pendant\, earrings\, or keychain—that they have designed and crafted themselves. SUMMARY:Bonsai Society of Portland Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden welcomes the Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) for a bonsai exhibition in the both the Yanai Family Classroom\, located in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center\, and the Lemelson Studio. Bonsai\, which literally translates to “tree-in-a-tray\,” is the art and science of miniature trees. Literal translation aside\, “bonsai” has evolved to mean an artistically shaped woody plant that is intended to suggest the image of a mature tree in nature. The creation of a miniaturized landscape fulfills the human yearning for a connection to nature in the smallest of spaces. This exhibition will include dozens of bonsai from BSOP members’ private collections\, including several world-class examples of this ancient Japanese art form. Guests will see coniferous\, deciduous\, fruiting\, and flowering species\, ranging in size from three-foot-tall specimens to tiny shohin trees small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Shohin will be on display in the Lemelson Studio. Included with garden admission.

This event is family-friendly\, and crafts are geared toward kids who can independently use scissors\, glue sticks\, and basic school supplies or with parental assistance. He completed a 3-year apprenticeship with Michael Hagedorn\, after graduating from Yale University. DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. DESCRIPTION:Witness the magic of mokuhanga\, Japanese woodblock printing\, up close through this special demonstration of the process by Oregon-based artist Barbara Mason\, assisted by Alex Prentiss. There will be a Q&A following the demonstration\, as well as a display of the tools\, woodblocks\, and paper used in the art of mokuhanga\, and a selection of finished prints to enjoy up close. This demonstration is a collaboration with Print Arts Northwest. Print Arts Northwest (PAN) advocates the art of printmaking through exhibitions\, professional development and educational programs that promote the creation\, appreciation and collection of original artists’ prints by professional and emerging printmakers.
