Oregon Koto-Kai is a group passionate about the Japanese koto\, a 13-stringed zither with over 1000 years of history. Founded by Mitsuki Dazai in February 2012\, the ensemble performed its first concert in Portland\, Oregon. Since then\, they have performed throughout the state at venues like the Portland Japanese Garden\, Portland Rose Festival\, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Their mission is to introduce Japanese koto music to the broader community by providing concerts and lessons. Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. DESCRIPTION:Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum\, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And\, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum\, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing for Members
DESCRIPTION:Experience a guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support. Forest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. It is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. Light snacks\, drinks\, and tea will be provided before the walk.  This event is free for members\, but class size is limited. Please register ahead on the Hoyt Arboretum website.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to care for Hoyt Arboretum’s trees and celebrate Earth Day with us! With 189-acres and more than 6\,000 trees along 12 miles of trails\, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system\, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world. No previous stewardship crew experience is required; training\, tools\, gloves\, and volunteer parking passes are provided. Registration is required through the Hoyt Arboretum website.

DESCRIPTION:In this series of very beginner-friendly classes\, students will learn the basics of mixing and painting with watercolor paints in popular colors for nature drawings. Using just a few paints\, we will focus on creating a range of nature-inspired colors using the three primaries of red\, yellow and blue\, as well as learning techniques for applying paint to paper. Each week will be dedicated to creating a range of hues within a color family: gorgeous greens\, beautiful blues\, vibrant reds and oranges\, and luminous neutrals. SUMMARY:Bonsai Society of Portland Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden welcomes the Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) for a bonsai exhibition in the both the Yanai Family Classroom\, located in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center\, and the Lemelson Studio. Bonsai\, which literally translates to “tree-in-a-tray\,” is the art and science of miniature trees. Literal translation aside\, “bonsai” has evolved to mean an artistically shaped woody plant that is intended to suggest the image of a mature tree in nature. The creation of a miniaturized landscape fulfills the human yearning for a connection to nature in the smallest of spaces. This exhibition will include dozens of bonsai from BSOP members’ private collections\, including several world-class examples of this ancient Japanese art form. Guests will see coniferous\, deciduous\, fruiting\, and flowering species\, ranging in size from three-foot-tall specimens to tiny shohin trees small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Shohin will be on display in the Lemelson Studio. Included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:This hands-on art class introduces you to the creative process of making resin jewelry using UV resin\, pigments\, polymer clay\, and pressed natural elements. The workshop will begin with a casual nature walk to gather inspiration and learn about some PNW native plants before moving into the studio portion. Back inside you will explore fundamental resin techniques\, experiment with color blending\, try out clay sculpting to incorporate into the resin pieces\, and practice embedding natural materials. The workshop emphasizes creativity\, craftsmanship\, and the joy of working with both natural and handmade elements. Each student will leave with at least three finished pieces of jewelry—such as a pendant\, earrings\, or keychain—that they have designed and crafted themselves.
