SUMMARY:Fall Fruit at the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that all flowering plants produce fruits? Did you know that blueberries and watermelons are true berries\, but strawberries and blackberries are not? Fruits can be fleshy (like a ripe tomato) or dry (like a hazelnut). In this mini-workshop and walk\, we will learn about the differences between fruits and vegetables\, discuss some of the different types of fruits and how they are derived\, then go for a walk to see some of the diversity of fruit types at the Arboretum. We aim to send you home with lots of geeky botanical knowledge to impress your family and friends!

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, our Chief Curator\, Sadafumi (Sada) Uchiyama will discuss the maintenance of pine trees. Uchiyama is a fourth-generation Japanese gardener from southern Japan where his family has been involved in gardening for over a century.

DESCRIPTION:In this creative writing workshop\, we’ll look at how research can inform and enliven our creative work. How can we incorporate the language of science into a poem? How can we turn what we learned from the fascinating article we read in Scientific American into a sonnet\, a story\, or an essay? How can we strike a balance between scientific and lyrical language in our writing about the natural world so that we don’t sound like a field guide but our readers learn something and are inspired to learn more on their own? We’ll look at some examples of this kind of creative work\, and participants will be encouraged to go down rabbit holes in their research and use the joy and surprise of learning about the natural world as flint and spark for their own writing.
