SUMMARY:Winter Textile Workshop Series with Judilee Fitzhugh: Sashiko Mending
DESCRIPTION:Now famed worldwide for its striking traditional indigo-and-white color scheme and complex decorative patterns\, sashiko’s utilitarian use as a mending technique is sometimes forgotten. In this workshop students will learn to mend well-loved items using beautiful and strong sashiko stitching. While fabrics will be provided\, students can also bring their own textiles to mend such as jeans\, flannel shirts\, or hand towels.

SUMMARY:Tu Bishvat Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join this very special Forest Bathing event\, honoring the Jewish “New Year of the Trees”\, or Tu Bishvat. All are welcome (Jewish or not) as we celebrate and connect with these miraculous beings. We’ll explore our interconnections\, and reflect on what the trees can teach us (and what we can offer back). As ritual leader and writer Dori Midnight reminds us\, “Like trees\, we are earthbound beings arching toward sky\, holding root hands under the earth.”

It started as a date for farmers to record the age of their trees and has become a time to connect with environmental values and caring for the Earth.

SUMMARY:Winter Plant ID
DESCRIPTION:Portland is fortunately very green in the winter due to evergreen trees\, ferns\, and moss. Other plants\, however\, are bare and make identification more of a mystery. Join this class to learn the clues to search for that make plant identification more manageable in the colder months. Class will start in the library with a brief presentation along with samples of key features to search for when identifying deciduous plants in the winter. Then bundle-up and walk outside during the remainder of time to practice identification on the trails with your instructor.
