SUMMARY:Lovely Hummingbirds (Virtual)

Their flight appears to defy the laws of physics\, their iridescent feathers resemble precious gems\, and they seem to survive on nothing but flower nectar. But there is more to the story! Attend this presentation to learn about our Pacific Northwest hummingbirds as well as other North and South American species. You’ll come away with an even greater appreciation for these tiny birds plus tips on how to invite them to your own garden.\nAbout the instructor: Longtime birder and teacher Laura Whittemore loves to show beginners the tricks of the trade. She has taught classes for Portland Audubon and previously worked for Backyard Bird Shop. Laura holds a BA in Biology from Lewis and Clark College and has traveled in the US\, Australia\, South Africa\, and Antarctica in search of birds. \nThe Zoom meeting link will be emailed before the program and you will receive a link of the live recording the day after the program. \nMember Price: $15.00\, Non-Member Price: $20.00 \nIf you qualify for an Oregon income assistance program\, please email nina@hoytarboretum.org for details about further discounted program rates.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing
DESCRIPTION:Experience a two-hour guided forest bathing walk through Hoyt Arboretum’s unique tree collection and forested areas. Forest Bathing (also known as Forest Therapy) offers many health benefits from stress relief to immune system and mood support.\nForest therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. Forest therapy is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku\, which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits\, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems\, and for stabilizing and improving mood and cognition. We build on those benefits and look beyond\, to what happens when people remember that we are a part of nature\, not separate from it\, and are related to all other beings in fundamental ways. \nAbout the Instructor: Shawna Hartung is a certified guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. She has over 20 years of experience leading nature-based programs for youth and adults in the Pacific Northwest. \nMember Cost: $20.00\, Non-Member Cost $25.00 \nIf you qualify for an Oregon income assistance program\, please email nina@hoytarboretum.org for details about further discounted program rates.
