Join us at the Public Tour Guide volunteer training on Sunday\, March 22 from 9am-12pm to learn more about Hoyt’s public tour program. During the training\, volunteers will learn best practices for leading public tours including communication\, visitor engagement\, and group management. The training will also cover seasonal tour content and additional resources for expanding your knowledge of the trees and plants found in Hoyt Arboretum. New Tour Guides will be required to participate in follow-up training sessions prior to leading tours at the Arboretum. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Into the Trees: Personal Vision Quest
DESCRIPTION:Dive into what you want to express and the direction your life is calling you. This workshop helps you shake off what’s complete and make space for the new energy rising within you. With the generous\, stabilizing support of the trees\, you’ll explore what is unfolding in your life. Using the Tree Transformation Oracle Deck\, each participant will receive a few personal cards to illuminate insights\, patterns\, and next steps. We’ll deepen this guidance through meditation\, visualization\, and presence practices among the trees. Being in the forest amplifies everything—clarity\, intuition\, and connection—so we will spend time outdoors as weather allows\, with sheltered space available as needed. You will visit specific trees to assist in clarifying your vision and direction for the year ahead. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Spring Equinox: Balance\, Symbolism & Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Explore pressed flowers\, symbolism\, and the first signs of awakening!\nThis early-spring session celebrates Hoyt Arboretum’s landscape as it reawakens—especially the magnolia and emerging buds. Using pressed plants\, flowers\, and delicate collage techniques\, we explore themes of emergence\, renewal\, and balance as the Earth invites us to reinvent ourselves in tune with the Spring season. You will learn: How to create collages and visual poems using pressed botanicals – The symbolism of early spring blooms and cultural celebrations of the Spring Equinox (magnolia\, trilliums\, snowdrops\, and more) – Creative prompts that invite balance and personal renewal at the Equinox. You will leave with: A spring botanical collage or visual poem – A personal self-note for the season of renewal – A renewed sense of hope\, softness\, and alignment with nature’s cycles. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum \, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Brainy Birds
DESCRIPTION:Birds are incredible and have adapted to survive in dynamic & changing environments. Every species has unique traits and sometimes quite specialized strategies. Using the backdrop of seasonal changes at Hoyt Arboretum\, Dr. Kiki Sanford will facilitate discovery of the many ways it is connected to its avian inhabitants. Winter classes will center on adaptations for surviving intense seasonal conditions. Spring brings the frenzy of breeding season. Summer includes juvenile development and the onset of the next annual cycle. And\, Autumn classes will focus on the fall migration. Each seasonal class will highlight the various birds present in the Arboretum\, and include observation & discussion of specific aspects of how their brains & bodies lead to certain behaviors useful in the Hoyt habitats. Short informal lectures and group discussions will be followed by exploratory bird-watching hikes to observe these processes in action. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Winter Tree Energy
DESCRIPTION:Winter draws us inward\, and the trees do the same. In this season\, evergreens become especially potent— their energy condensed\, vibrant\, and deeply palpable. In this workshop\, we’ll explore these winter currents through gentle Qigong\, Tree Transformation Cards\, and direct connection with three tree species: Douglas-fir\, cedar (deodar\, western red\, and incense)\, and redwood. Each tree has a distinctly different energy. You will receive simple guidance on how to meet a tree and experience the first moments when your energy naturally tunes to the tree’s steady\, present frequency. We’ll also touch on plant neuroscience—tree intelligence\, sensory perception\, and how trees respond to our presence. During your time with the trees\, you may feel an energetic or physical shift\, gain clarity\, or receive a message. These insights can be fleeting\, so bring a way to record them. Trees are aware of us\, and many people experience profound exchanges. Please dress warmly and bring layers so you can enjoy being outdoors in winter. Afterward\, we’ll return to the Hoyt office library for tea and optional sharing of experiences. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:Winter Maple Sugaring
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that sap from the Bigleaf Maple tree\, native to the Pacific Northwest\, can be made into syrup similar to sugar maple syrup from the Eastern United States? Join Meghan Kearns from the Oregon Maple Project to learn about the history\, science\, process\, and best practices for maple sugaring in the PNW. Take a guided walk on Arboretum trails to visit Bigleaf Maples that have been tapped\, as well as watch a tree tapping demonstration. The program will conclude with a maple syrup tasting. Take home tapping kits and syrup will be available for purchase. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.

SUMMARY:BudBurst Community Science Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning about volunteering for community science at Hoyt Arboretum? Join Hoyt Arboretum’s plant taxonomist and herbarium curator Mandy Tu for an online Zoom training on Thursday\, February 12 from 10 to 11am to learn about how you can get involved with BudBurst\, a nationwide\, community science-driven effort to study the impact of climate change on plants. Volunteers monitor the timing of specific events in a plant’s life cycle (full bloom\, fruiting\, leaf fall\, etc.)\, record their observations\, and then share their data with BudBurst. At this training\, volunteers will learn about plant structures and phenology as well as how scientists are using the data collected by BudBurst community scientists. You’ll also learn about the specific plant species we’re studying at Hoyt Arboretum and how to record plant cycle observations. Individuals can participate in BudBurst independently but are encouraged to visit Hoyt Arboretum at least every other week during the growing season (approximately March through November) to make and record observations. This event is coordinated by Hoyt Arboretum\, and registration is required through their website.
