DESCRIPTION:Visit Portland Japanese Garden this summer to see an exhibition of stunning photography by one of our members! The sights and scenes one encounters while traveling\, though fleeting\, can nevertheless leave an impression that resonate throughout the course of a life. For its inaugural Garden Gallery exhibition\, Portland Japanese Garden is thrilled to present A Journey in Moments: The Photography of Daniel Ng\, on display from May 28 through August 10. Ng is a Photographer Member whose work was selected through a Call for Photography issued in early 2026. Travelogue-inspired and vibrant in color and composition\, Ng’s work was taken over the course of a 2024 trip to Japan as well as during visits to the Garden during Photographer Hours. Ng’s photography invites contemplation of the subtle beauty encountered in the everyday\, and the impact of thoughtful exchange across cultures. From the serene lines of Japanese temple architecture and the gentle clouds of sakura blossoms in a clear sky\, to the natural patterns of street traffic in bustling Tokyo\, Ng captures scenes across a spectrum of peace and excitement familiar to visitors to Japan\, inviting the viewer to dream of returning again and again. SUMMARY:Woven Light: Washi Sculptures by Yuri Kinoshita
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, Portland Japanese Garden is host to a glowing world of light.  Woven Light showcases the illuminated washi sculptures of Yuri Kinoshita\, a Seattle-based artist who artfully crafts floating landscapes of light through her sculptural lamps that bridge the art and design world. Guests who visit the Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery will see that through carefully hand-woven and sculpted washi (Japanese handmade paper made from plant fibers)\, soft light and shadow inspire a magical sense of place\, evoking the unique environment of the Pacific Northwest. More than artwork\, Kinoshita’s works are experiences that transport the viewer into a warm world of light through both works that evoke natural forms and abstracted shapes that inspire contemplation. Washi has been made in Japan for centuries. Its uses range from decoration for religious rites and ceremonies\, to art and design purposes including calligraphy\, woodblock printing\, and origami. Kinoshita’s washi is sourced from artisans in Echizen in Fukui Prefecture\, Japan\, a region known for its long tradition of paper-making. The texture and shape of the paper is transformed depending on the type of washi used: the rough weave of bamboo fiber contrast with the soft\, fine glow of kozo\, washi created using mulberry bark. Kinoshita’s light-filled sculptures are paired with bases that often are formed from richly colored walnut wood of the Pacific Northwest\, crafted by master woodworker Craig Yamamoto\, nephew to iconic woodworker George Nakashima.

SUMMARY:Mizuhiki Demonstration by Kaori Funaki
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free demonstration of mizuhiki\, the centuries-old art of decorative knot-tying\, led by Kaori Funaki in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Through this thoughtful program\, you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of the symbolism behind mizuhiki and new inspiration for adding beauty and meaning to your gift-giving. Mizuhiki (水引lit. “water pull”) is made of twisted washi paper cords. This artform dates back to the 7th century\, when envoys to China during the Sui Dynasty brought back gifts to Japan that were wrapped in red and white hemp strings. Following this exchange\, offerings to the Imperial Palace began to be wrapped in red and white threads\, and mizuhiki soon developed into a deeply rooted element of Japanese gift-giving culture. It is most commonly used to decorate gift envelopes during holidays and special occasions\, with each style of knot and color of thread carrying significant meaning and ultimately symbolizing the connections between people. Mizuhiki’s unique characteristics have since inspired artists to craft new and complex patterns to create intricate sculptures\, accessories\, and decorations—and also inspired the logo for Japan Institute of Portland Japanese Garden. SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Traditional Japanese Soroban
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special soroban presentation by Miwako Sakabayashi\, President of Soroban League North America\, featuring demonstrations by visiting students from Japan and the United States at the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Soroban\, the Japanese abacus\, was introduced to Japan from China more than 500 years ago and was refined into the uniquely Japanese style still used today. For centuries\, it played an important role in education\, business\, and everyday life in Japan. Even in the digital age\, soroban continues to be valued as both a practical calculation tool and a powerful method for developing concentration\, memory\, mental math skills\, and a deeper understanding of numbers. During the presentation\, visiting students from Japan\, together with students from the United States\, will demonstrate the results of their daily soroban training through exciting live performances and rapid mental calculation exercises. Guests will also learn how soroban students visualize numbers and perform amazingly fast calculations using the abacus. After the lecture\, guests are invited to join Miwako Sakabayashi and participating students in the Yanai Classroom for a hands-on soroban experience. Students will teach visitors simple calculations using the abacus\, offering a fun and interactive introduction to this traditional Japanese learning tool.  This event is included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Calligraphy by Kihachiro Nishiura
DESCRIPTION:Japanese calligraphy\, also known as Shodō (書道 ) which translates to “the way of writing\,” has been practiced in Japan since the 6th century. Shodō specifically refers to the writing of kanji and kana characters using a bamboo brush (fude) dipped in liquid ink (sumi) to write on washi paper. Composition\, placement\, the shading of the ink\, and technique are all indicators of skill in shodō.  Artist Kihachiro Nishiura will first demonstrate various historical styles of calligraphy in chronological order. Next\, he will then give a demonstration of large-scale calligraphy. After the presentation\, Nishirua will answer questions and draw requested characters for participants.  Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Oregon Koto-Kai
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto performance by Oregon Koto-Kai at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The standard Koto is a thirteen-string plucked zither introduced to Japan in the 7th century. It has been part of the Gagaku court ensemble for over a thousand years\, becoming popular among the merchant classes in the Edo period (1600-1868). An important member of the traditional Sankyoku ensemble\, along with the three-string Shamisen and Shakuhachi (bamboo flute)\, the Koto developed further in a solo capacity\, eventually becoming one of Japan’s most prominent musical instruments. Today\, its varied repertoire and wide range of playing techniques provide a rich palette of sound textures\, making the Koto appealing to audiences worldwide. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Kashintei Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer a free public demonstration of Chado\, the Way of Tea\, in the Kashintei Tea House (in the Tea Garden) from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. Kashintei (literally “Flower-Heart Room”) is the name of the authentic Tea House that sits in the heart of our Tea Garden. The structure was made in Japan\, shipped in pieces\, and reassembled in the Garden. Tea houses are composed of several strictly defined spaces: the anteroom [mizuya]\, where the utensils for the ceremony are readied beforehand; the sitting room [zashiki]\, where the tea ceremony is performed; the alcove [tokonoma] where flowers and a calligraphy scroll are displayed.  Four-and-a-half tatami mats\, which are the standard dimensions of a traditional tea house\, cover the floor.

DESCRIPTION:A highlight of summer festivals in Japan is the bon-odori (盆踊り/ Bon dance). Each region in Japan has their own version of the dance\, as well as different music. In Japanese Buddhist tradition\, bon-odori is a way to entertain and send off the spirits of our ancestors and celebrate life. Dancers circle the yagura\, a high wooden bandstand for the musicians and singers. At Portland Japanese Garden\, dances will be taught by Chris Dart and demonstrated by dancers from Oregon Buddhist Temple. Come to learn the dances\, see people dressed in yukata\, and to hear and feel the sound of taiko drums. This event is included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Member Mindfulness Tour
DESCRIPTION:This intimate tour focuses not on meditation\, but instead on learning to bring mindful awareness to oneself\, and the world around us\, through intentional observation and connections. An experienced guide will provide a foundation for the art of contemplative exploration throughout various Garden spaces\, and gently guide awareness away from the busyness of everyday life\, back toward the connection to nature and experience of peace. Each tour will be slightly unique to focus on the current season\, weather (occurs rain or shine)\, and garden spaces. However\, these tours are designed and intended to help members continue to enhance future Garden visits through independent mindful practice through all seasons. Tours will begin in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard starting at 9:00am\, and typically last about 45-60 minutes. Reservations required.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Bonsai by Andrew Robson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a bonsai presentation by Andrew Robson at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Bonsai\, literal translation tree-in-a-tray\, is the art and science of miniature trees. Andrew Robson is a deciduous artist in the American bonsai community. He completed a 3-year apprenticeship with Michael Hagedorn\, after graduating from Yale University. Andrew is the President of the Bonsai Society of Portland\, the largest bonsai club in the United States. He is also a member of the Portland Bonsai Village and has previously served as a board member of the American Bonsai Society. He regularly lectures and exhibits work at the Portland Japanese Garden. Andrew hosts the Bonsai Wire Podcast and regularly creates new episodes with other hosts and prominent figures in the bonsai community. He resides at his recently constructed garden RAKUYO-en with his golden retriever Bailey\, where he teaches and shares the art of deciduous bonsai. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Koto and Shakuhachi
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto and shakuhachi performance by Masumi Timson and Dan Bosshardt at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The standard Koto is a thirteen-string plucked zither. It was introduced to Japan from China through the Korean Peninsula in the 7th century. The instrument has been part of the Gagaku court ensemble for over one thousand years\, gradually becoming popular among the merchant classes of the Edo period (1600-1868). An important member of the traditional Sankyoku ensemble\, along with the three-string Shamisen and Shakuhachi (bamboo flute)\, the Koto developed further in a solo capacity\, eventually gaining its place as one of Japan’s most prominent musical instruments. Today a varied repertoire along with a wide range of playing techniques provides a wonderful palette of sound textures\, making the Koto appealing to audiences the world over.
