SUMMARY:Cultural Performance: Shinobue Flute\, Tsugaru Shamisen & Piano Performance by Maido Mind
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute\, Tsugaru shamisen and a piano performance by Maido Mind. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugaru shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western.

SUMMARY:Textile Workshop: Japanese Teacup Cozy/ Carrier with Judilee Fitzhugh
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with textile artisan Judilee Fitzhugh to offer a series of four immersive textile workshops. In each session\, participants will relax and enjoy the rhythmic dance of needle and thread while learning the meditative art of hand-stitching to create Japanese- and garden-inspired projects. This workshop runs from 9:30am–4:00pm\, including six hours of instruction and a 30-minute lunch break. Participation is limited to 20 students per workshop\, and classes are open to students of all levels of sewing experience. Kinchaku (巾着) are traditional drawstring pouches used to carry personal possessions. They are often used like a handbag and can vary in size and purpose from carrying coins to bento boxes. In this session\, you will create a pieced kinchaku designed to carry a teacup using traditional fabrics and techniques. Each participant will receive a teacup and everything they need to create their own kinchaku. (You are welcome to bring your own teacup\,  but please note this pouch won’t accommodate anything larger than 3 inches tall by 3 inches wide.)

Our knowledgeable tour guides\, some of whom have been patrons of Portland Japanese Garden for decades\, will provide members with interesting and informative cultural\, historical\, and horticultural information about the Garden. Whether you just joined as a member for the first time\, or have been a long-time supporter\, guided tours can provide new insights into the vision of the Garden and its place in the community. Tours will begin in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard starting at 9:00am\, and typically last about 45 minutes. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto and cello performance by SamaZama at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. SamaZama members will tell the beloved Japanese folk tale of Momotaro\, the Peach Boy\, a boy born from a peach who grows up to conquer some evil ogres. The Garden is excited to offer this family-family performance as part of it’s extended celebration of the festival\, Kodomo no Hi\, or Children’s Day. SamaZama Koto/Cello Duo is a collaboration of the Koto – a Japanese traditional musical instrument played by Masumi Timson and the cello played by Joseph Harchanko. “Samazama” is the Japanese word for variety. The SamaZama Duo combines the esoteric nature of traditional and contemporary Japanese music with tango\, jazz\, blues and western classical music\, blending the instruments and music of Eastern and Western cultures in a moving and uncommon musical synthesis. Their music deftly unites these two widely divergent instruments through traditional and contemporary Koto works to create a vibrant musical soundscape that soothes and inspires. DESCRIPTION:Witness the magic of mokuhanga\, Japanese woodblock printing\, up close through this special demonstration of the process by Oregon-based artist Barbara Mason\, assisted by Alex Prentiss. Bonsai\, literal translation tree-in-a-tray\, is the art and science of miniature trees. Portland Japanese Garden usually focuses on the tree\, not the container\, when we showcase bonsai. However\, a tree or shrub doesn’t become a bonsai until it is combined with the right container in which to live and grow. Tokutate’s demonstration will focus on the creation of the tray\, or pots\, used in bonsai. At last year’s Bonsai Society of Portland Show\, guests watched Nao create  a pot over the course of three hours.   Included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden welcomes the Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) for a bonsai exhibition in the both the Yanai Family Classroom\, located in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center\, and the Lemelson Studio. Bonsai\, which literally translates to “tree-in-a-tray\,” is the art and science of miniature trees. Literal translation aside\, “bonsai” has evolved to mean an artistically shaped woody plant that is intended to suggest the image of a mature tree in nature. The creation of a miniaturized landscape fulfills the human yearning for a connection to nature in the smallest of spaces. This exhibition will include dozens of bonsai from BSOP members’ private collections\, including several world-class examples of this ancient Japanese art form. Guests will see coniferous\, deciduous\, fruiting\, and flowering species\, ranging in size from three-foot-tall specimens to tiny shohin trees small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Shohin will be on display in the Lemelson Studio. Included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free musical performance featuring shinobue flute\, Tsugaru Shamisen and a piano performance by Maido Mind. This cultural performance will be held from 1:15 to 2:15pm in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugara Shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto performance by Oregon Koto-Kai at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Oregon Koto-Kai is a group passionate about the Japanese koto\, a 13-stringed zither with over 1000 years of history. Founded by Mitsuki Dazai in February 2012\, the ensemble performed its first concert in Portland\, Oregon. Since then\, they have performed throughout the state at venues like the Portland Japanese Garden\, Portland Rose Festival\, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Their mission is to introduce Japanese koto music to the broader community by providing concerts and lessons. They collaborate with local musicians\, improve players’ skills\, and contribute to the culture. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Introductory Ikebana Workshop with Carolyn Alter\, Ohara School Of Ikebana - Oregon Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Alter\, Head Teacher of the Ohara School of Ikebana’s Oregon Chapter\, will bring the beauty of kado (the way of flowers) to Portland Japanese Garden by teaching an introductory workshop. Students will receive a creative outlet\, a respite from the fast speed of life\, as well as the chance to connect with nature\, nurture their spirit\, and learn about an aspect of Japanese culture. Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers\,” and is unique from other approaches to flower arrangements. Workshop instructor Carolyn Alter will teach students how to “bring the essence of nature into their arrangements.” Participants will learn basic Moribana Upright based on the curriculum set forth by the Ohara School of Ikebana. The workshop will include both demonstrations by Carolyn and hands-on time for the students to create.

DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation by Nana Bellerud from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder\, Sofu Teshigahara\, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere\, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle\, appreciated by many people from all over the world\, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people. This event is included with garden admission.

It involves choreographed movements where both the host and guest escape the fast pace of life and experience calm. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Akari\, Ikebana Display Presented by Saga Goryu School - North American Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Shakamuni Buddha’s birthday is commemorated on the eighth day of the fourth month. In Japan\, this celebration is called Hana Matsuri. Saga Goryu North America Chapter will offer an ikebana installation for Hana Matsuri at Portland Japanese Garden from April 8 through 11. Members and guests who pay admission can enjoy this special display in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard. The theme of this year’s ikebana installation is akari\, or “bright\,” which was inspired by the Imperial New Year’s Poetry Reading. Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” It dates to the sixth century when China and Korea introduced Buddhism to Japan. Floral offerings\, known as kuge\, were placed on the altar of temples. Viewing this display is included with garden admission.
