SUMMARY:Bonsai Society of Portland Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden welcomes the Bonsai Society of Portland (BSOP) for a bonsai exhibition in the both the Yanai Family Classroom\, located in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center\, and the Lemelson Studio. Bonsai\, which literally translates to “tree-in-a-tray\,” is the art and science of miniature trees. Literal translation aside\, “bonsai” has evolved to mean an artistically shaped woody plant that is intended to suggest the image of a mature tree in nature. The creation of a miniaturized landscape fulfills the human yearning for a connection to nature in the smallest of spaces. This exhibition will include dozens of bonsai from BSOP members’ private collections\, including several world-class examples of this ancient Japanese art form. Guests will see coniferous\, deciduous\, fruiting\, and flowering species\, ranging in size from three-foot-tall specimens to tiny shohin trees small enough to hold in the palm of your hand. Shohin will be on display in the Lemelson Studio. Included with garden admission.

Yumi Torimaru and Nozomi Imade\, who come from profoundly different musical backgrounds\, formed Maido Mind in 2022. Yumi studied traditional Japanese instruments including taiko drum\, shinobue (bamboo flutes)\, and Tsugara Shamisen (Japanese lute). Classically trained Nozomi started studying piano at the age 3 and studied vocal music at a prestigious music university in Japan. Both women were born and raised in the Kansai region of Japan. In the Kansai dialect\, “Maido” is a versatile word used as a greeting\, a farewell\, and a thank you. The mind enables a person to be aware of the world and their experiences: to think and to feel. Maido Mind\, with Yumi on shinobue and Nozomi’s piano and vocal performance\, offers a wide variety of music\, from tradition to modern\, standard to original\, and Japanese to Western. DESCRIPTION:Carolyn Alter\, Head Teacher of the Ohara School of Ikebana’s Oregon Chapter\, will bring the beauty of kado (the way of flowers) to Portland Japanese Garden by teaching an introductory workshop. Students will receive a creative outlet\, a respite from the fast speed of life\, as well as the chance to connect with nature\, nurture their spirit\, and learn about an aspect of Japanese culture. Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers\,” and is unique from other approaches to flower arrangements. Workshop instructor Carolyn Alter will teach students how to “bring the essence of nature into their arrangements.” Participants will learn basic Moribana Upright based on the curriculum set forth by the Ohara School of Ikebana. The workshop will include both demonstrations by Carolyn and hands-on time for the students to create.

DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation by Nana Bellerud from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The Sogetsu School is known for its willingness to explore new ideas and materials. The founder\, Sofu Teshigahara\, broke away from tradition in 1927 to establish his new school based on the belief that anyone can create ikebana anywhere\, and with almost anything. The Sogetsu philosophy advocates that ikebana should be part of a lifestyle\, appreciated by many people from all over the world\, rather than being considered an exclusive aspect of Japanese culture to be enjoyed by a limited number of people. SUMMARY:Akari\, Ikebana Display Presented by Saga Goryu School - North American Chapter
DESCRIPTION:Shakamuni Buddha’s birthday is commemorated on the eighth day of the fourth month. In Japan\, this celebration is called Hana Matsuri. Saga Goryu North America Chapter will offer an ikebana installation for Hana Matsuri at Portland Japanese Garden from April 8 through 11. Members and guests who pay admission can enjoy this special display in the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard. The theme of this year’s ikebana installation is akari\, or “bright\,” which was inspired by the Imperial New Year’s Poetry Reading. Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” It dates to the sixth century when China and Korea introduced Buddhism to Japan. Floral offerings\, known as kuge\, were placed on the altar of temples. Viewing this display is included with garden admission.

DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chadō\, the Way of Tea\, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony is a manner of preparing and drinking a bowl of tea. More than just making tea\, it reflects the Japanese sense of omotenashi\, or wholehearted hospitality. It involves choreographed movements where both the host and guest escape the fast pace of life and experience calm. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Textile Workshop: Portland Japanese Garden Tote with Sashiko Peace Lantern with Judilee Fitzhugh
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with textile artisan Judilee Fitzhugh to offer a series of four immersive textile workshops. In each session\, participants will relax and enjoy the rhythmic dance of needle and thread while learning the meditative art of hand-stitching to create Japanese- and garden-inspired projects. This workshop runs from 9:30am–4:00pm\, including six hours of instruction and a 30-minute lunch break. Participation is limited to 20 students per workshop\, and classes are open to students of all levels of sewing experience.

SUMMARY:Cultural Perfomance: Koto and Violin
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a free koto and violin performance by Masumi Timson and Fumino Ando at 1:15pm at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. The standard Koto is a thirteen-string plucked zither. It was introduced to Japan from China through the Korean Peninsula in the 7th century. The instrument has been part of the Gagaku court ensemble for over one thousand years\, gradually becoming popular among the merchant classes of the Edo period (1600-1868). An important member of the traditional Sankyoku ensemble\, along with the three-string Shamisen and Shakuhachi (bamboo flute)\, the Koto developed further in a solo capacity\, eventually gaining its place as one of Japan’s most prominent musical instruments. Today a varied repertoire along with a wide range of playing techniques provides a wonderful palette of sound textures\, making the Koto appealing to audiences the world over. DESCRIPTION:Ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arranging\, has been translated as “living flowers” or “giving life to flowers.” Join us from 1:15-2:15pm for an ikebana presentation byMiwa Satoh from the Ohara School of Ikebana in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Miwa Satoh obtained her teacher’s qualification from the Ohara school in Japan in 2000. After that\, she took a break from her Ikebana practice to study in the United States. Once her family life was settled\, she resumed her practice in 2017. She currently teaches in Vancouver\, Washington while studying under an assistant professor based in Japan. She belongs to the Ohara School Northern California chapter in the US\, and the Kurume chapter in Japan.

Oregon Koto-Kai is a group passionate about the Japanese koto\, a 13-stringed zither with over 1000 years of history. Founded by Mitsuki Dazai in February 2012\, the ensemble performed its first concert in Portland\, Oregon. Since then\, they have performed throughout the state at venues like the Portland Japanese Garden\, Portland Rose Festival\, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. Their mission is to introduce Japanese koto music to the broader community by providing concerts and lessons. They collaborate with local musicians\, improve players’ skills\, and contribute to the culture. This performance is included with garden admission.
