SUMMARY:Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints
DESCRIPTION:This March\, step into a world where nature-themed prints meet Portland Japanese Garden’s springtime vibrance in Enduring Impressions: Contemporary Woodblock Prints. Featuring the art of mokuhanga (木版画)\, Japanese-style woodblock printmaking\, this exhibition reveals how a centuries-old tradition is experiencing a contemporary revival among artists around the world\, who use the quiet power and unique characteristics of woodblock printmaking to create captivating works of art. Mokuhanga has been embraced by artists as an environmentally friendly art form that uses wood\, water-based pigments\, and paper made from plant fibers. The exhibition’s featured artists are among the growing international movement where meticulously crafted art prints incorporating these traditional tools and techniques are complemented by alternative printmaking technologies and strategies for contemporary expression. This exhibition marks the Garden’s first collaboration with the Honolulu Museum of Art and is co-curated by Stephen Salel\, the Museum’s Curator of Japanese Art. Across the galleries at Portland Japanese Garden\, Enduring Impressions presents an eclectic range of contemporary prints\, custom-made for the show\, alongside a behind-the-scenes look at the process\, history and future of this iconic art form. Included with garden admission.

SUMMARY:Hina Matsuri: Doll's Day
DESCRIPTION:Hina Matsuri\, also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day\, is celebrated each year in Japan on March 3 to celebrate the happiness\, growth\, and good health of girls. In Japan\, families with daughters mark the festival by displaying intricately crafted hina dolls dressed in ornate costumes several days before the festival. Visitors can view and take photos with a traditional display of hina dolls in the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. March 3 is also called Momo-no-Sekku\, or Peach Blossom Festival\, because according to the lunar calendar peach blossoms were in full bloom on this day. It was also believed that peach blossoms had the power to drive away evil spirits. Many families in Japan display sprigs of peach blossoms together with hina dolls. At Portland Japanese Garden\, an ikebana arrangement by Nana Bellerud\, President of Ikebana International Portland Chapter #47 and Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland\, will accompany the display.

SUMMARY:Modern Kintsugi Workshop with Emi Joyce
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden is partnering with Emi Joyce\, a Portland-based kintsugi restorer and instructor\, to provide two modern kintsugi workshops on Saturday\, February 7. Kintsugi (金継ぎ\, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. In this centuries-old practice\, fractures transform from hidden weak points into beautiful golden elements worth celebrating. The philosophy of kintsugi teaches us to embrace imperfections in our life and appreciate the beauty of human flaws. While the traditional method used by experts is challenging and requires cautious handling of materials like urushi lacquer\, the “modern” kintsugi method uses accessible materials and is ideal for beginners.

SUMMARY:Living Traditions 2026 Visions of Water: Revitalizing Cities\, Landscapes\, and Community Life
DESCRIPTION:Join Japan Institute of Portland Japanese Garden at the World Forestry Center (4033 SW Canyon Rd. Portland\, OR 97221) in our shared home of Washington Park for the third in-person installment of Living Traditions\, a series of focused conversations and talks that explore some of the most iconic facets of Japanese culture. “Visions of Water: Revitalizing Cities\, Landscapes\, and Community Life” will explore water as a bridge between heritage and innovation. Featuring historic examples such as Kyoto’s sophisticated networks of rivers\, canals\, and springs alongside contemporary architectural responses shaped by climate\, community\, and place\, this year’s program brings together an insightful panel discussion of global leaders in landscape design\, architecture\, and urban culture. The luminary speakers featured in the panel discussion include Kathryn Gustafson (Founding Partner at Gustafson + Bowman)\, Shunsaku Miyagi (Founding Partner at PLACEMEDIA Landscape Architects Collaborative and Visiting Professor in Landscape Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design)\, and Balázs Bognár (Partner & Executive Vice President at Kengo Kuma & Associates). Aki Nakanishi (Director of Japan Institute & Arlene Schnitzer Curator of Culture\, Art\, and Education) will moderate this dialogue on how water can help cities and regions imagine a more harmonious future grounded in beauty\, ecology\, and cultural insight.

SUMMARY:Cultural Demonstration: Tea Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chadō\, the Way of Tea\, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm. The Way of Tea is intrinsically linked to Japanese gardens and understanding the kokoro (heart) of Japanese gardening. The traditional Japanese tea ceremony is a manner of preparing and drinking a bowl of tea. More than just making tea\, it reflects the Japanese sense of omotenashi\, or wholehearted hospitality. It involves choreographed movements where both the host and guest escape the fast pace of life and experience calm. This demonstration is included with garden admission.
