International Rose Test Garden
Audio Transcript
Hi there, I am Rachel Burlington, the Curator of the International Rose Test Garden, part of Portland Parks & Recreation. We are here today at the Jesse Currey Bench in the Royal Rosarian Garden. In 1919, Currey was appointed as the FIRST Curator of the world-famous rose gardens that surround us. And in 2019, a full century later, I was selected for the same prestigious position -marking the first time a woman has ever served as Curator.
I’m honored to have the responsibility of leading the care for one of Oregon’s top attractions –a global destination that gives joy to countless visitors each year. And I’d like to think that my appointment to this important role reflects a changing world, full of increasing opportunities for those who may not have had them before.I’ve always loved plants, and science. As a child, I wrote stories about roses -and here I am today, in my own rose story! I’m glad the Garden holds such a special place in so many people’s hearts.
“I want to help showcase Portland’s amazing roses, as well as to show the world that women, like me, are leading the effort to cultivate and care for them.”
And what I’d like to see is not only for the International Rose Test Garden to thrive for generations to come –but for women to see me in my role and be inspired to pursue their own careers and passions in science, botany, and horticulture. I want to help showcase Portland’s amazing roses, as well as to show the world that women –like me –are leading the effort to cultivate and care for them. And there is plenty of room for more women in this industry. Thank you for visiting and enjoy Portland’s International Rose Test Garden.
