Down the Rabbit Hole: How Research Can Enrich Your Creative Work

In this creative writing workshop, we’ll look at how research can inform and enliven our creative work. How can we incorporate the language of science into a poem? How can we turn what we learned from the fascinating article we read in Scientific American into a sonnet, a story, or an essay? How can we strike a balance between scientific and lyrical language in our writing about the natural world so that we don’t sound like a field guide but our readers learn something and are inspired to learn more on their own? We’ll look at some examples of this kind of creative work, and participants will be encouraged to go down rabbit holes in their research and use the joy and surprise of learning about the natural world as flint and spark for their own writing.
