Star Festival features a colorful display of tanzaku, or wish strips, hanging from bamboo. This tradition of writing wishes or prayers comes from the Edo period, when children were encouraged to practice their writing and hang them from bamboo for all to see. Tanabata is one of five seasonal festivals celebrated in Japan since the 8th century.

Behind the Shoji is Portland Japanese Garden’s annual show and sale of Japanese and Japanese-inspired wares including textiles, prints, clothing,
ceramics, home décor, and much more. Located behind the shoji (sliding screens) of the Pavilion Gallery, visitors can peruse a variety of curated items often unavailable short of a visit to Japan itself.

You’ll come away with an even greater appreciation for these tiny birds plus tips on how to invite them to your own garden

The Pavilion Gallery will be open from 9am to 10am, and Gallery staff will be available to share behind-the-scenes information and insights on Kaneko and his works.

Cool and wet Portland Novembers are the perfect time to search for and find fall mushrooms. In this class, mushroom enthusiast and avid forager Leah Bendlin will teach the basics about common mushrooms you are likely to see in the Portland area this time of year. She will share how to properly identify them as well as dive into their role in our local ecology. Bring in your own finds for guided practice applying ID processes following the presentation.
