Attend this online workshop to learn all you need to know about who those LBBs are, where to find them, and how to attract (some of) them to your yard. You’ll even learn about the fledglings of several local species that look nothing like their parents to make identification even more confusing.

Our evergreen trees don’t change too much during the winter time, but our favorite deciduous trees make a fairly dramatic transformation. Join arborist Casey Clapp of the podcast Completely Arbortrary on an education walk through Hoyt Arboretum focused on how to identify trees using only the clues left behind after their leaves fall away. This course will meander through the arboretum and show you how to identify common trees in our area, and provide a framework for what to look for when trying to identify an unknown tree without using the leaves.

She will guide you in layering colors, practicing brush strokes, matching details, and more. No previous nature drawing necessary; just bring your love of learning and creativity.

Our knowledgeable tour guides, some of whom have been patrons of Portland Japanese Garden for decades, will provide members with interesting and informative cultural, historical, and horticultural information about the Garden.
Volunteer to care for Hoyt Arboretum’s trees and trails at the first Saturday Crew of the season! With 189-acres and more than 6,000 trees along 12 miles of trails, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world.

In this workshop we will be discussing basic mason bee biology, their habitat needs, maintenance requirements, and how to avoid misinformation and gimmicky products that could throw a wrench in your venture. We’ll also demonstrate setting up a mason bee habitat at the Arboretum.
Hina Matsuri, also called Doll’s Day or Girl’s Day, is a special time to pray for the growth and happiness of girls. It is also called Momo no Sekku, or “Peach Blossom Festival. Visitors can appreciate a traditional display of dolls representing the Emperor and Empress with members of the Imperial Court. The event will also feature storytelling, songs, and an ikebana workshop for young Garden guests.
