Nature connection and creative expression meet in these weekly Nature Journaling experiences led by artist Elizabeth Higgins. With prompts and gentle guidance, students will explore a different area of the Arboretum each week, recording their observations and inspirations through writing and drawing exercises centered on themes of appreciation and curiosity. No experience is necessary.

Kaneko, recently honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center, has made major contributions to the field of sculptural art on a global scale, exploring the relationships between art, nature, and people with the bold and placement of his works.
Volunteer at Hoyt Arboretum to care for our trees and trails with a variety of hands-on stewardship projects.
Projects vary for each crew depending on the needs of the season, but often include invasive species removal, weeding and mulching, trail maintenance, and more. With 189-acres and more than 6,000 trees along 12 miles of trails, volunteers are incredibly important to maintaining Hoyt Arboretum’s tree collection and trail system, and it’s a unique opportunity for volunteers to learn about and care for rare and unusual trees and plants from around the world. The nationally-accredited Maple collection at Hoyt Arboretum glows every autumn with colors of over 90 species, subspecies, and cultivars. Join Tedde McMillen for a walking tour of this collection as she shares fun facts and characteristics about the different species. How does the lion’s head maple get its name and what maple is native to Oregon? You’ll find the answers to these questions and many more as you explore the trails.

Discover the fascinating and fun world of mushrooms! The afternoon will start with a brief outdoor introduction about the ecological roles of fungi, their forms, how they eat, reproduce and basics of identification. The talk will be followed by a casual walk on the trails to carefully observe and explore the species commonly found at Hoyt and in the Pacific Northwest!
