When the root is deep, there is no need to fear the wind. Many tai chi moves use images from nature—stable as a pine, flowing like a river, hands moving as clouds. Enjoying tai chi in the Arboretum allows us to connect deeply to that imagery.
Enjoy the process of nature connection through the creative expression of nature journaling.
Our holiday lights display starts early with two festive nights for the 21+ crowd. Visitors can sample local beers, ciders and hard seltzers while strolling among a forest of brightly lit trees and dazzling 3-D light sculptures.

Learn how to create a one-of-a-kind mini-habitat living centerpiece using PNW native plants in a repurposed lamp globe. We’ll cover basic planting, floral design composition techniques and then have fun decorating our centerpieces with moss, branches, fall berries/foliage, and festive holiday decorations or insect/bird faux decorations (you are welcomed to bring your own miniature decorations). Just think like you’re creating a living holiday fairy tabletop garden. You will take home a custom, sustainable and long-lasting centerpiece ready for the holiday that lasts for a few seasons.
Portland Japanese Garden will offer free public demonstrations of Chado, the Way of Tea, at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center from 1:15 – 2:15pm.
