Free Attractions and Activities
Walk Through a World of Trees at Hoyt Arboretum
Hoyt Arboretum is a living museum of trees, and exploring its vast, natural landscape is always free. Every month, the Arboretum offers free events and experiences to discover its 12 miles of trails and thousands of tree species.
Free Guided Tours: Hoyt Arboretum’s guided tours are a no-cost way to explore! You can join a knowledgeable volunteer for a hike or a general public tour to learn about the nationally recognized tree collections within the Arboretum. You’ll likely wander through the Magnolia Collection in the spring, the Conifer Collection in the summer, and the Maple Collection in the fall—every month of the year offers something new to see and smell. Public Tours are volunteer-led and run every Sunday at 11am through October. ASL interpreters are available for certain tours.
Saturday Crew: If you’re feeling extra passionate about nature, you can volunteer your time and give back by helping to care for the Arboretum’s trees and trails. This is a great opportunity to make some new friends—both people and trees–and no previous experience is required!
Serenity and Splendor at the Rose Garden
A visit to Washington Park would be incomplete without a stroll through the International Rose Test Garden. Access to the Rose Garden is free, allowing visitors to wander through vibrant displays of thousands of roses, take in sweet floral fragrances, and simply enjoy breathtaking beauty. To make your visit even more enjoyable, pack a picnic basket filled with your favorite snacks and find a perfect spot to lounge on the grassy lawn or a cozy bench. It’s a delightful way to spend a peaceful afternoon surrounded by nature’s art—and it doesn’t cost a thing!
Sweeping Views at the Historic Reservoir
Take a stroll through the newly renovated Washington Park Reservoir and enjoy peaceful walking paths, open green lawns, and sweeping views of the water and city—all for free. It’s a welcoming spot where anyone can relax, reflect, or take a break between other Park attractions. Temporarily closed.
Memorials, Playgrounds, and More
Memorials: The Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Oregon Holocaust Memorial are somber, powerful sites that offer a place for contemplation and remembrance–all without a fee.
Statues and Public Art: Washington Park is home to several historic statues and monuments, all free to visit, including Sacajawea and Jean-Baptiste, Chief Multnomah, Lewis & Clark, and multiple memorial fountains. These pieces invite reflection on our region’s complex history and provide an opportunity to learn, question, and connect with the diverse stories that have shaped our community.
Recreation: Bring your own equipment and get some exercise on the free, first-come, first-served tennis courts, or hone your skills with a bow and arrow at the Washington Park archery range. Parking in the gravel lot across from the archery range is free, too.
